A rich
history
Groenlo, a town with a rich and eventful history, plays a prominent role in Dutch history, particularly due to the Battle of Grolle. This battle, which took place in 1627 during the Eighty Years' War, was a crucial moment for both the town and the country. Groenlo, then known as Grolle, was a strategically important fortified town and was fiercely contested by Spanish troops and the Dutch forces led by Prince Maurits of Nassau. After an intense siege lasting nearly a month, the Dutch army eventually captured the town, marking a turning point in the struggle against Spanish dominance.
